Summer Time Hygge

What is Hygge?

“Hygge (pronounced hue-guh not hoo-gah) is a Danish word used when acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out, ordinary or extraordinary as cozy, charming or special.” (Hygge House)

For me Hygge comes when I slow down, and take the time to enjoy the simpler things in life, like a cup of tea with my husband or curling up on the sofa with a good book.  I try to create these moments in my life and recognize them when they come. Music would not be beautiful if it did not have the rests between the notes. Like music the breaths between the things we do, are equally as important to our lives, as all of the activities we check off of our lists.

How to Bring Summer Time Hygge Into Your Life?

I know that Hygge is often associated with curling up to a winter fire with hot cocoa, but you can create this feeling all year round. Today, I am going to share some of the ways I bring Hygge into my life during the summer months.

Gardening & Connecting with Your Food

My gardening game is strong this year and I love spending time harvesting all of the seeds that I planted in the Spring. Spending time taking care of my garden creates a connection with the earth, and an appreciation for my food and where it comes from. Even if you live in a more urban environment or are intimidated by the idea of growing your own vegetables, you can start a small herb garden right next to your kitchen sink.  I am telling you that the first time you make pesto with basil from your own garden you will feel a connection to your food.

This year, I have a surplus of tomatoes, and I love sharing them with co-workers and family. I also, decided to put some of my heirloom tomatoes to work and made a Heirloom Tomato Gallete with Honeyed Goat Cheese. Caramelized Shallots, and Thyme (pictured above).

Summer is the perfect time of year to make fruit cobblers, beautiful salads, and enjoy some outdoor grilling.

Creating a Special Night Time Ritual

For me I like to light a candle and spend sometime meditating before bed. It helps quiet my mind and is great for my overall mental health. I love these candles from Northern Lights Candles, you can find the one I have pictured here. The vanilla bean and date scent is so warm and inviting. Plus, these containers are so gorgeous I plan on using them as storage on my bathroom sink, when I finish the candle.

Enjoy the Extra Hours of Light

During the summer we have extra hours of light at the end of the day. You can create moments of hygge by eating your dinner outside with some wildflowers and watching the sunset. Or going on an evening walk after work, taking the time to notice that nature is the most beautiful artist of them all.

Summer is the perfect time to get out on the lake or ocean. I am lucky enough to live just a short drive from the beach, and there is something about the beauty of sight, sound, and smell that immediately invites me to slow down and enjoy the moment.

I hope I have inspired some of you to create cozy and special moments for yourself and loved ones. Taking the time to enjoy these moments in life.

Let me know how you create a feeling of hygge during the summer months in the comments section below.

I hate that in today’s society the word Feminism often gets confused with man-hating. It isn’t that I hate men, it is that I want to be treated equally to them.  The definition of feminism is: “the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.” I feel like […]
